Meet Our Third Judge for Cupcake Camp Charleston, Tina Russo-Kinney

Born and raised in New England, Tina Russo-Kinney was two when she used to sit under the Willow tree in the backyard for hours, making mud pies and telling stories to the neighborhood dog, Pokey.

Fast forward to adulthood and Tina became a writer (a storyteller if you will) with a focus on writing about animals, and of course, a pastry chef.

Her passion for baking dates back several generation when her great-great grandparents boarded a ship from Sicily, Italy to America. Though the original bakery did not survive the Great Depression, Tina set out to rebuild the family dream. Though she loves making traditional Italian pastries, her true passion comes in the form of pies.

When Tina is not baking at Mudd Pie Girl Bakery, she is editing her first novel, The Princess of the Underground Railroad, set in Charleston during the Civil War. Some of her other writing has appeared in Just Labs Magazine, Carolina Bark, and My Petz Magazine. She also enjoys spending time with her family, including her father, inventor of the Hot Rod Helicopter, Bob Kinney, and her nephews.

Tina lives in Charleston with her 5 large rescue dogs, Baker, Diesel, (Mossy) Oak, Tremor, and Buddy; two rescue cats, Ray and Isis, Hulk the rescue iguana, and her fiancé, Sgt. Bill Coash of the USMC. They are expecting their first child in February 2015.

Meet Another Judge for Cupcake Camp Charleston: Darius King of King's Cakes and Confections

I was born and raised in Charleston, SC and have 9 years experience in the baking world.  At 17, I started out as a cake decorator at a local grocery store and was so inspired by what could be done in the world of baking that I took it to the next level and decided to study it further as I entered into college.
In 2012, I graduated from the Culinary Institute of Charleston with an Advanced Certificate in baking and pastry and an Associate's Degree in Applied Science: Baking and Pastry. Currently, I work as a pastry cook at Magnolia's restaurant on Eastbay Street in downtown Charleston and as a baker for Miltary Deli/Bakery Services on the Charleston Air Force Base. I also run my own start up business known as King’s Cakes and Confections in my spare time.

In my off time, I am just a regular guy. I'm family oriented and would move mountains for my friends. That’s me in a nutshell.

Review for One of this Year's Prizes: New York Baking Company Silicone Baking Cups

I was asked to review one of this year's prizes, the silicone baking cups by Rizzi from The New York Baking Company, and while some of them stuck to the cups, I was impressed by how easy they were to peel off and work with. I love the fun colors, and I know they will be a hit at house parties and holiday gatherings as great conversation pieces. For Cupcake Camp Charleston, I'm not sure they would do well because I fear that people would walk away with the liners or throw them away not knowing they are recyclable. I was thinking of putting paper liners inside the silicone cups, but (1) they were too snug and (2) it would completely oppose the efforts to benefit the environment. Perhaps a solution would be to sell them in bulk and not just in a 24-piece package. They're pretty affordable and easy to store.

I hope you guys are excited to receive this as a prize because I know I will be using them time and time again.

2014 Charity is Darkness to Light

Here at Cupcake Camp Charleston we believe in giving back to the community by supporting local charities. Each year as our camp locations change, we also like to be fair and change to different charities as we raise awareness and help each other. This year's charity is Darkness to Light.  Darkness to Light is a national non-profit based in Charleston, SC and dedicated to the prevention of child sexual abuse.  Their mission is to empower adults to prevent child sexual abuse. Help end child sexual abuse. Visit D2L.org to find out how. Like Darkness to Light on Facebook to spread awareness and education. Contest Changes

Hello, Bakers!
We've upped the ante a little bit and made some changes to our Contest this year. We're quite excited about it and hope you will be, too! The prizes will be just as amazing and worth your bake-offs!

Our first change is creating a new special category that syncs with our Holy City Brewing location with the BYOB (Bring Your Own Brew) Cupcake. This category will be judged on the best use of beer in your ingredients.  Please remember to bring 3 cupcakes per judge.

The second change is the slight increase of cupcakes needed for competition. All competing bakers who bring 72 cupcakes are permitted to enter in one category of the competition. Bakers who bring 144 or more are permitted to enter two categories of the competition. Bakers who bring 240 or more cupcakes, you are permitted to enter all three categories.
1:72, 2:144, 3:240 or greater  = win, win, win! Remember, it's ALL for charity and we thank you in advance!

Lastly, we are removing Amateur/Professional categories and will have you bake it out to the top 3 for 2014. Eep! It's fierce and we know you will all have fun!

Registration forms will be available online soon.  Tell all your baking buddies and feel free to share this post!
